Welcome to Sustainable Pueblo 2050

The next era of environmental, economic, and social justice is blooming in Southern Colorado.

Community Initiatives

Clean Air Pueblo

Clean Air Pueblo formed in May 2022 with the purpose to:

  • Collect data on air pollution in Pueblo County
  • Make accessible existing data on air pollution
  • Educate and empower Pueblo people to take action for clean air.

Climate Resilience

In order to prepare for upcoming climate catastrophe, we must turn to each other! SP2050 is taking a multi-faceted approach that collaborates with local officials, giving Pueblo residents the tools to access their risk, and engage in mutual aid support networks.

Circular Economies

In order to reach actual sustainability, SP2050 aims to address the elephant in the room, the rarely addressed root cause of climate change: for profit, growth-based systems. Our solutions range from grassroots cooperatives to policy measures.

Why 2050? Well, we started asking ourselves “What will Pueblo look like in 2050 if 1) we keep on the same track as other environmental groups pushing renewables and trying to pass policy that could be erased with the next administration or 2) we break out of what we are supposed to do and start doing what needs to be done to prepare for the worst of climate catastrophe while practicing new ways of reciprocity and building structures based in care.
Two recent articles also reaffirmed the looming 2050 deadline:
1) Global GDP Faces 50% Loss Without Climate Change Action, Study Finds (https://www.forbes.com/.../global-gdp-faces-50-fall.../)
2) I'm a scientist and I think society will collapse by 2050. Here's how I'm preparing. (https://inews.co.uk/.../scientist-think-society-collapse...)

The Forbes article exemplifies the disconnect of priorities in our society starting with its title. The laser focus on GDP loss completely overshadows the doom inducing figure of 4 billion loss of human life by 2050 which is almost half of earth’s global population. “Half of the world’s population will be dead by 2050 without substantial climate action” should have been the title because that is what we should be trying to protect along with all other life. We see this as a blatant indicator of the media losing the plot, of our society telling us what it really holds dear and spoiler: it's not us. The second article, centering a climate scientist's direct and alarming warning that they think society will collapse by 2050, is much more straightforward in the horrifying realities of where we are headed and how we can prepare for that time. Our favorite part of the article is the reminder that a vital part of preparedness is community: “The bottom line is that nobody can survive on their own... If we are to have any chance of survival, we need to cooperate, I think that’s absolutely critical.”

What CAN Pueblo look like in 2050? What do you believe it takes to get there together?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is degrowth?

Degrowth is both a transformative movement and a critical framework. It challenges the prevailing growth-centric economic and social paradigms. It advocates for a reduction in material and energy used in production and consumption to align human activities with ecological limits, and requires that this reduction is planned and democratic.

What are the principles of degrowth?

Resource sovereignty: Be a steward of nature

Decolonising Futures: Unlearn, relearn, and heal

Commons: Decide together

Sharing: Sufficiency for all, overabundance for none

Circularity: Waste not, want not

And much more!!

What is decolonization?

Decolonization involves actively deconstructing and challenging colonialism and its systems.

“Without new visions, we don’t know what to build, only what to knock down. We not only end up confused, rudderless, and cynical, but we forget that making a revolution is not a series of clever maneuvers and tactics, but a process that can and must transform us”
― Robin D.G. Kelley
